The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is committing £32.8m ($42m) to GambleAware. The regulator said the “system stabilization fund” will help the charity properly manage the transition from a voluntary gambling operator funding model to a statutory levy.

GambleAware aims to prevent gambling-related harm, support people who might be suffering from addiction, and provide treatment options.

The UKGC wants the charity to prioritize certain areas of research when using the funds, including creating an evidence base for gambling harms. Another key area of focus will be tackling inequalities that exist in the current treatment model. GambleAware will detail its use of the funds in annual reports.

In its recent white paper on gambling legislation reform, the UK government outlined that it plans to introduce a mandatory levy on operators. The current model permits companies to decide on the amount of gambling yield that they donate to GambleAware annually.

Donations will become mandatory when the white paper recommendation comes into effect. NHS England, GambleAware, and the Betting and Gaming Council have all welcomed the transition to a mandatory levy.
