Police in Austin, Texas, have arrested a man on suspicion of first-degree murder following a dispute at an illegal dice game at a residence on Sunday evening. Austin Police Department responded to a call before 6pm and discovered 25-year-old Steve Gonzalez with gunshot wounds to his chest. Attempts to save Gonzalez were unsuccessful.

disagreement began when the shooter accused the victim of cheating

The disagreement began when the shooter accused the victim of cheating during the game, with Gonzalez then insulting the man’s family. A scuffle broke out and other players tried to intervene as punches and chairs flew through the air.

Gonzalez tried leaving the scene, while the other person involved in the argument, Martin Tovar, went to his truck, retrieved his gun, and fired three shots into the ground.

Witnesses heard six more gunshots and saw Gonzalez on the ground as Tovar left the scene in his vehicle. Police subsequently arrested the shooter, who claimed he wrestled for Gonzalez’s gun and that it went off.

An affidavit from one of the witnesses claims that the victim had sold a handgun to Tovar earlier that day.
